Intent

At Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School, sustainability is woven through our vision and values. Through our focus on creativity, curiosity, resilience and integrity, we seek to develop pupils who are not only successful learners but also caring and responsible members of society. We aim to inspire children to understand the importance of protecting our environment and to recognise the role they can play in creating positive change. By fostering a strong sense of stewardship and global citizenship across our curriculum, we empower pupils to become courageous advocates who contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and hopeful future.

Implementation

Sustainability is an integral part of both our curriculum and daily school life. Pupils are provided with meaningful opportunities to engage with environmental issues through practical, real-world experiences. Through initiatives such as the Eco Team, recycling programmes, litter-picking activities and waste reduction projects, children learn how their actions can make a difference. They participate in campaigns, community projects and environmental initiatives that encourage them to think critically, take responsibility and influence change. Practical experiences, including growing food, repurposing materials and promoting environmental awareness, ensure learning is purposeful, engaging and relevant.

Impact

As a result, pupils develop a secure understanding of sustainability and the confidence to act upon their knowledge. They demonstrate leadership, teamwork and a commitment to making positive contributions within school and beyond. Through their experiences, children build empathy, responsibility and a strong sense of social and environmental justice. Pupils leave SUN Primary School as informed, resilient and proactive individuals, equipped to make thoughtful decisions and contribute positively to their communities.
